The story "Taras Bulba" first published in the print in 1835 as part of the Mirgorod collection. Gogol was carefully preparing for work on this work, carefully studied historical sources and collected materials, including relied on the materials of Ukrainian chronicles and folk songs. It helped the author to deal with the psychology of people described by the era and the peculiarities of life.
The latter is based on a real historical event - the uprising of the Zaporizhia Cossacks against the Polish gentry, which occurred in 1638. The main characters have real prototypes - the Kurenient Ataman family of Okhrim Makuhi. The descendant of this person told Gogol a dramatic history of his own family, and the writer took this information as a basis for a story.
Okhrim was the companion of Bogdan Khmelnitsky. He had three sons. Senior, Nazar, became a prototype for Andria. This Nazar fell in love with the Polish Panley, betrayed "his" and moved to the side of the Poles. The second son, Homa, tried to bring Nazar back to his father, but did not succeed and died.
In the first edition, the story "Taras Bulba" looked casually. In Gogol manuscript, some words were missed, the phrases were broken, and the writer's handwriting was illegible. Because of this, there are many errors in the first edition. Gogol refined the story, and in 1842 the text survived the second edition. This time, new episodes appeared in the story, so the volume of the text was halved.
"Taras Bulba"
