Childhood and youth

The life path of Günther Wilhelma Grass began on October 16, 1927 in the city of Danzig, where he, together with his sister Valtutwood, was brought up in a multinational family.

At the beginning of World War II, the future writer was a member of the youth squad of Adolf Hitler, and upon reaching the age of 17 received documents and went to the front. In April 1945, during the battle in the ranks of the SESS tank division, the Grass received a slight injury, and shortly before the victory of the Soviet Army was captured in the city of Marienbad.

Reward in the commitment of the Nazis, in the late 1940s Grass found asylum not far from Düsseldorf, where he began to study sculptures and graphs in the Art Academy. Then, working around the waiter, raised the level of his own education and in 1956 he graduated from Berlin University of Fine Arts.

Personal life
