Indeed, in 1994, the era of computer animation was already approaching, and drawn animals against the background of experiments of other studios look old-fashioned. However, in fact the authors spent a lot of time on working out details, signs and allegories, which is best seen in the Simba relationship line.
So, after the death of Mufaas, the son runs away from his native lands towards the bloody-red sunset, which symbolizes the sunset of the older king of the lion. Returning home, having matured Simba runs towards the sunrise - it rises the sun of his own rule.
