In an interview with Julia, Donaldson admitted that the plot of the work was formed by the Chinese fairy tale of the girl and Tigre. The little heroine of a fabulous narration, walking through the forest, thought that the beasts were afraid of her, although in fact the forest inhabitants were afraid of a tiger walking in the footsteps of the girl. The idea of the original plot was formed by the writer during the year, and the spelling of the text took 2 weeks. The author made a small mouse, and the terrible beast - a tiger. As a genre chosen a fairy tale in verses.

However, in the process of work it turned out that the word "Tiger" in the English version the writer cannot find suitable by the meaning of the rhyme. Then the idea of creating a new character, a kind of forest monster, who could scare predators with his own kind. It was invented Gruffalo, the appearance of which had a colorful description: sharp fangs with a monstrous mouth, claws, wart on the nose, purple spikes on the back and other frightening portrait details.

Creating the name of the hero, the writer chose it by analogy with one of the types of buffaloes - Buffalo. As a result, it turned out a funny form "Ground", simultaneously indicating both the formidable view of the inhabitant of the forest, and on his comicness. After the plot was thought out, the main characters of the fairy tales, Julia turned to the artist-illustrator Axel Sheffler. He created funny pictures for children's fairy tales, which are included in the modern editions of the book. The fairy tale is designed for age-related audience from 3 to 7 years.
