Jean-Antoine Watto was born on October 10, 1684 in Valencienne - the city, which barely moved from the Spanish Netherlands under the wing of France.
Father Jean Philip Watto was distinguished by a steep temper and expressiveness. Often, a man was thrown out with fists on one of the four sons or on the mother of Antoine Michel Lardenua. Because of his character, Jean Philipples spent more often in a prison cell than at home.
Despite the substantial minus, the watto-senior saw creative potential in his son. Thanks to Antohan's father, he had learned to the local artist Jacques Albera Zherogen, whose name was not lucky enough to glorify. They say, by 11 years, young tagging surpassed the teacher. According to another version, Watto threw classes, because his father refused to pay them.
Personal life
Information that Antoine Watto led a stormy personal life and, like many creative people, was looking for inspiration in platonic relations, not preserved. On the contrary, the artist belonged to women with emphasized respect. This feature served as the basis for the film "The Mystery of Antoine Watto" (2007).Let Watto did not have time to create his family, but until recent days he was supported by the brothers. Painting
Antoine Watto's adult life began in 1702, when he fled to Paris against the will of his father. The young men had no money, so in the capital I had to go on foot.
The artist quickly found a suitable job: in the workshop under the Bridge of Notre Dame for the sake of mass production, paintings created in the best traditions of Dutch and Flemish painting were copied. During this period, Watto was perfectly mastered the sketch technique, which became characteristic of his schedule. In the free from the "fakes" time he painted from nature.
Creativity In the finest manifestation of Antoine Watto, Pierre's collectors and Jean Marietta, Father and Son were demonstrated. Rembrandt, Titian, Rubens and other masters were kept in their store.
However, Marietta Dali Watto much more than acquaintance with professional art - they were sucking the young artist Claude Resource, a famous engraver and decorator. He did not play a special role in the formation of the style of Watto, but developed his artistic taste. Under the influence of housing, such pictures were born as "Satira on Doctors" (1706) and "Harlequin - Emperor of the Moon" (1707).
In 1709, Watto tried to win the Roman Prize, the highest French award of the Royal Academy of Arts in the field of art, but took 2nd place. In the 1712, he took another attempt. The jury considered the painter as talented that instead of the main prize - an annual internship in Rome - he suggested that he join the Academy. As the exam, Watto was asked to draw a picture. 5 years later, he presented the jury a masterpiece "Pilgrimage to the island of Cefera."
The picture is created in two versions. The first, dated 1717, is stored in the Louvre in Paris, the second, created a year later, at the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin.
In the work of Antoine Watto, a lot of masterpieces: "Love in the French stage" (1716), "Venetian holiday" (1718), "Caprician" (1718) and other paintings. The most amazing is considered "the sign of Zersen (a shop in which paintings are sold)" (1720). It is called the painting-testament and, as a result, the peak of Watto's creativity.
The canvas written by typical flowers, abundant with small parts, has really served as sign. For a short time it was concerned about the North Dame Bridge, and now stored in Charlottenburg.
Death
Antoine Watto worried friends with a careless attitude towards his financial situation. The artist seemed to know that he would live for a long time, and therefore he did not postpone "for a black day."Since childhood, Watto often sick. In 1720, for the Council for the next submission, the painter headed to London. The smokey air of England badly reflected on the health of Watto - provoked "asleep" tuberculosis. He had to return home immediately.
Until the last days of life, Watto strongly coughed. He said to friends that London's fault was frying in the lungs. In fact, tuberculous laryngitis became the cause of death. Watto died on July 18, 1721, at 36 years old.
