The history of project creation is rooted at the beginning of the 80s of the 20th century. Then young musicians King Diamond (Kim Petersen), Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, who previously played in the Brats group, decided to create their own team. Over the years, the team has changed, and sometimes Mercyful Fate ceased operations. There was creative disagreements between the participants. But then the artists revised their views and were going to continue to work.
Music
In 1982, the performers released a debut EP, and after a year the first full-length album Melissa appeared on the world. The disc immediately interested Melomanians with an unusual subject associated with the dark forces, the spirits of the underworld. The name of the record gave a fictional heroine - a witch, burned at the fire. This image then periodically continued to be used in other compositions of the Danish group.In 1984, the musicians pleased the fans with the new work - Studio album Don't Break The Oath. In support of the release, the team went on tour for several months to the States, and also performed at festivals in Germany. The reason for this was the conflict between Gitarist Hank Sherman and King Diamond. The first suggested moving to more commercial sound. Such an approach did not appreciate Kim. Since Diamond was a central figure in the group, after the departure of the vocalist, the further existence of the project lost its meaning.
In 1985 King Diamond, Michael Denner and Tim Hansen created their own team called by the name of the singer. After 2 years, the guitarists left the team, Mike Moon and Hal Patino came to their place.
Several years have passed, and in 1993 the former members of Mercyful Fate decided to reunite and continue creativity. The first work of the group was the album in The Shadows, released on the Metal Blade Records label. In August 2019, the musicians made a statement that Mercyful Fate would play several concerts in Europe in the summer of 2020. The vocalist remained Kim Petersen.
