In 1977, shortly after moving from the suburbs of the State of Florida to New York, Guitarist Truston Moore fastened with neighbors on the room Room Tone group (later changed the name on Coachmen). The history of the project was short-lived. After the collapse, the fate of Mura with Kim Gordon.

Music
In December 1981, in the New York Studio Sonic Youth, a mini-collection of the same name was recorded, which included 5 demo. The album sounded as a traditional post-punk in contrast to later releases.The Debut Album "Confusion IS Sex" saw the light in 1983. Over time, Sonic Youth was disappointed in SST Records and switched to Enigma Records. They were released "Daydream Nation" (1988) - an album that brought a significant recognition in the United States. And the best-selling disc was "Goo" (1990).
Sonic Youth discography expanded: "Dirty" (1992), "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star" (1994), which reached the 34th place in Billboard 200, despite the lack of tour (Gordon wore Moore's child under his heart), " Washing Machine "(1995)," A Thousand Leaves "(1998). In support of the latter, only the single "Sunday" was released, in the clip the main role played Machalya Kalkin.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Sonic Youth began to produce experimental entries on the SYR's own label. Music can be called, rather, instrumental improvisation. Albums and tracks were composed in different languages: "Syr1" in French, "Syr2" in Dutch and so on. Esperanto, Lithuanian, Japanese, Arpitan, Danish were used.
In the 2000s, Sonic Youth has released 5 albums - NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000), Murray Street (2002), Sonic Nurse (2004), Rather Ripped (2006), "The Eternal" ( 2009), after which they went underground.
Collapse of the collective
On October 14, 2011, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore announced a divorce. This did not mean the collapse of the collective, but the plans for Sonic Youth became foggy, despite the existing developments for the next album. In November 2013, whether Ranaldo said in an interview:
