Biography

The flourishing of the creative biography of the British team Tears for Fears fell in the mid-1980s. It was then that MAD WORLD tracks, "Change" and "Pale Shelter" became the hits of foreign festivals and brought the Ivor Novello Awards to the performers. But the most memorable brainchild of the brightest representatives of the synth-ass, the new wave and alternative rock is still considered the album "Songs from the Big Chair", which gave the world song "Shout", "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" and "Head Over Heels".

The history of creation and composition

The history of the creation of the popular Tears for Fears team began in the late 1970s since the dating of teenagers Roland Orzabala and Kurt Smith, who lived next to the English city of Bat and fond of the works of famous British teams.

Dreaming to be like the idols, the guys took into the hands of musical instruments and, according to age, created the Graduate debut project ("Graduate"). The compositions included in the Nadorko recorded album "Acting My Age" became imitued with the style of the pop artist Elvis Kostello and the Melodians of the British Trio "The Jam". The single called "Elvis Should Play SKA" received sufficient fame in the UK and hit the charts of some European countries.

In 1981, friends preferences have changed, and ORZABAL, who became interested in psychoanalysis, initiated the creation of a new group The History of Headaches, subsequently renamed the work of Dr. Arthur Yannova in Tears for Fears.

Roland and Kurt intended to form the kernel of the team and, if necessary, use the services of session musicians, but acquaintance with the keyboard player Stanley and Drummer Manny Elias changed their plans and expanded the composition of the participants to 4 people.

Nevertheless, the need to use other performers finally disappeared, and in different years at TEARS for Fears worked by Andrew Sonanders and Alan Griffiths, Will Gregory Saxophonists and Josephine Wells and Pianist and Singer Delet Adams.

In 1986, Stanley and Elias worked out a 5-year-old contract with the founders and did not want to be permanent participants of the team. And after 5 years, members of the creative kernel were crumbling, and Roland Orsabal remained alone.

He continued to play music and enter into commercial contracts and soon discovered the need for contact with the former colleague Smith. After a business meeting, which implied the presence of both owners of the TEARS for fears brand, had dinner and decided to reunite.

In 2016, for the first time in a decade, joint tour of the musicians in the UK, ended with the speech at the Camp Destival event in Lulvort Castle.

Music

In 1981, after signing the contract with the British Studio Phonogram Records Tears for Fears, Sunfer The Children, Pale Shelter and Mad World and released the Debut Album "The Hurting".

Demonstrating the songs composed by Orzabal in youth, the musicians conquered ratings and reached the number in England 1. Critics recognized the talent of the performers and called the group by masters of packing unattractive family stories into a melodic wrapper of a successfully sold lyrical genre of Sinti-Pop. Foreign editions fully divided such an opinion, and the group gained fame abroad.

The Roland and Kurt gave a few concerts in the UK to a well-perceived plate of Roland and Kurt and began work on changing the musical style. Having experimented on the singles "The Way You Are", "Mothers Talk" and "Shout", the group realized the prospects for the selected direction and in 1985 presented an album called "Songs from the Big Chair", taken from the film about a woman with an incurable mental disorder.

Starting on the 2nd place in Britain and at the top of the charts in the USA, the record, where the political situation in America and Russia was mentioned, conquered the countries of the European continent and was recognized as the best operation of the decade. And the top compositions hit the list "1001 Works that you need to hear before dying."

Work done, completed by the tour and release of the documentary "Scenes from The Big Chair", demanded rest, and the musicians went for a break dedicated to a little-known MANCRAB Side project.

In 1989, Tears for Fears restored strength and went to the studio to record the 3rd album. Having spent more than £ 1 million for rental of premises and a salary of producers, the group did not receive satisfaction from the made and decided to compose the track list from the compositions played during the jam-sech.

As a result, the record "The Seeds of Love" covered musical genres from jazz and blues to the Beatles style and demonstrated the trends characteristic of the early creativity of the team. Thanks to the drums performed by Phil Collins and the vocals of the invited singer Olef Adams, the new job fell on the leading positions of popular charts and a few weeks after the official release received a platinum certificate RIAA.

Singles "Woman in chains" and "Advice for the Young At Heart" also found themselves in the top 40 list in the UK and were constantly sounded at concerts during the tour in support of the album. In May 1990, the live performance in the Bowl County Santa Barbara was filmed on the film and soon appeared in a limited box office under the working name "Going to California". Later, the video appeared on the DVD spread in the fan environment accompanied by a 64-page book with rare photographs, notes and texts of newly recorded songs.

In 1990, the manager of Paul King, which was engaged in the cases of Tears for Fears, announced bankruptcy, and the musicians remained with a debt of £ 1 million. This gave rise to a conflict between Orzabal and Smith and led to the decay of the initial composition of the Group. Interesting the fact that a man who ruined customers was later accused of fraud and got into a prison sentence, having lost the agent license for a period of 10 years.

During the proceedings, Roland managed to defend the right to use the Tears for Fears brand, and he decided not to part with the work and continue to write down the compositions and albums. At first, the sole participant of the group released the single "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" for the collection of the best songs of the team called "Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82-92)", and then on its initiative, video clips were removed on 12 songs included in Set of 2 CD and 1 DVD.

Meanwhile, Smith also took up solo creativity and under his own name released the Soul On Board in the United States. While the former colleague colleged gold and platinum awards in Canada, France, Great Britain and Germany, Kurt concluded a contract with producer Charlton Pettus and engaged in writing ordinary melodies, later filled during a short American tour.

ORZABAL continued to operate the title TEARS for Fears and composed songs to replenish the discography of the broken group. In 1993, at the Neptune's Kitchen label, he released the Fourth Elemental Studio Album, which included the Singles "Break It Down Again", "Cold" and "Goodnight Song". Despite the low ratings, these works were well sold, and after a while one of them became number 1 in the chart of US Modern Rock Tracks.

In 1995, together with the musicians Alane Griffiths and Tim Palmer and a back-in-vocalist, the Etoe Adams Roland recorded another studio plate dedicated to the topic of related links and the family problem. In the title "Raoul and The Kings of Spain", the leader of the group used the initial version of his own name and made a reference to the origin: Spanish and Latin American roots.

In the course of the work, ORZABAL signed a contract with the American studio EPIC and at the request of producers blocked the initial list of album compositions. This transition demanded the execution of documents and the personal presence of the second participant in Kurt Smith. After the meeting, former colleagues were settled by old differences and decided to reunite to continue concert activity.

In 2003, the reanimized group announced the date of release of the new plate, but for legal reasons postponed the presentation "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" for an indefinite period. As a result, the plate appeared on the shelves of music stores together with the anthology of creativity and DVD called "Secret World-Live in Paris", containing fragments of live performances and bonus tracks "Floating Down The River" and "What Are We WE Fighting For?".

In the next 10 years, the musicians toured a lot and were in no hurry to pour fans with news about the work on the new music and conversations and the preparation of the next album. Only in 2013, in an interview with Journalists of the American company BBC, ORZABAL hinted that soon Tears for Fears would close in the studio for the information of six almost finished singles.

Tears for Fears now

In 2017, the musicians released a collection of the best songs "Rule The World - The Greatest Hits" containing materials from previous 6 albums.

In 2019, the musicians performed in a number of cities in Europe and participated in the summer event Hampton Court Palace Festival.
