Vera Petrovna was born in the village of Barvikha, which is in the Moscow region, July 31, 1906. Father of the future actress, Peter Grigorievich, worked in a nikitin circus buffet.

As it often happens, the path of the young actress on the screen began with theatrical layouts. In 1924, Yuri Zavadsky, actor of the Wakhtangov Theater, founded his own theater studio. Vera Maretskaya, in the same year graduating the theater studio, adopted the invitation of Zavadsky to become an actress of his project. In 1942, the actress was awarded the Stalinist Prize for a major role in the play "Nadezhda Durov".
